Both Allergy Shots (subcutaneous immunotherapy, SCIT) and Allergy Drops (Sublingual immunotherapy, SLIT), use FDA approved allergy serums that come from plant pollen, dust, mold or animal dander. Both treatments help you become somewhat immune so that you will be less likely to have allergy symptoms. While the serums are FDA approved for skin testing and allergy shots, they are not FDA approved for allergy drops.
Allergy Shots have been used for over 100 years to treat allergies. One of the best things about allergy shots is that they use naturally derived extracts to reduce the need for medications in the long run. Studies show that people who get Allergy Shots have fewer missed days of school and work due to their allergy symptoms. Allergic asthma also becomes easier to control with Allergy Shots. Allergy Shots are covered by insurance (although copays, coinsurance and deductibles may apply).
Allergy Drops are more frequently used in other countries than in the USA. Studies suggest that people using drops may get a similar benefit, but the drops tend to work best for people with fewer allergies and less severe allergies. Allergy Drops are likely half as effective as allergy shots. Because Allergy Drops are not FDA approved, they are not covered by insurance and are an out of pocket expense.
Most people who do allergy shots are able to stop them after 5 years and continue to feel the benefit. Many people who do the drops are also able to stop after 5 years but it is unclear if the benefits are as long-lasting.
